Walk In Dental Clinic Accepts NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits)

At Walk In Dental Clinic on Yonge Street, we proudly welcome First Nations and Inuit patients covered by the Non-Insured Health Benefits program. NIHB is a federal program that covers a wide range of dental care for eligible people. We are an enrolled NIHB provider, which means we handle the paperwork and bill the program directly. You focus on your teeth, we take care of the rest. We serve patients across Toronto, North York, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan.

Who Is Eligible for NIHB Dental Coverage?

You may be eligible for NIHB dental coverage if you are a resident of Canada and one of the following:

A First Nations person registered under the Indian Act

An Inuk recognized by an Inuit land claim organization

A child under 2 whose parent qualifies for NIHB

There is no application form to fill out. If you meet the criteria above, you already have access. Just bring your status identification to your visit so we can confirm your coverage and bill NIHB for you.

What Does NIHB Cover for Dental?

NIHB covers most of the dental care you need to stay healthy. Coverage includes:

Some services have frequency limits, such as how often a cleaning or exam is covered. We check your coverage before treatment and tell you clearly what is included, so there are no surprises.

What NIHB Does Not Cover

A few treatments fall outside NIHB, or are only covered in specific medical cases. These usually include:

If you need one of these, we will talk you through the cost and your options first. Many patients combine NIHB with private insurance or the Canadian Dental Care Plan to cover more.

Does NIHB Cover Braces?

NIHB may cover braces, but only in specific cases. Coverage is limited to severe orthodontic problems that affect a child’s health or function, not cosmetic straightening. Every case needs prior approval, along with records from the dentist or orthodontist. Adult and cosmetic orthodontics, including most Invisalign, are generally not covered. If you are wondering whether your child qualifies, book a visit and we will assess it and guide you through the approval process.

Which Dental Treatments Need NIHB Predetermination?

Some treatments need approval from NIHB before they start. This is called predetermination, and it confirms your coverage in advance. Treatments that usually need it include:

Routine care like exams, cleanings, and fillings does not need predetermination. We prepare and submit these requests for you and let you know as soon as they are approved.

How NIHB Direct Billing and Claims Work at Our Clinic

As an enrolled NIHB provider, we bill the program directly through Express Scripts Canada. For most patients this means you pay nothing at your visit. Here is how it works:

01

Bring your status ID to your appointment

02

We confirm your coverage and treatment plan

03

We submit the claim to NIHB for you

If a treatment needs approval first, we handle that before we begin. Our front desk team manages the forms and the billing, so you never have to chase paperwork.

Same Day Emergency Dental Care With NIHB

If you are in pain, you do not have to wait. NIHB covers emergency dental care, and emergency visits do not need approval in advance. We welcome walk ins 7 days a week until midnight, so we can treat a toothache, a broken tooth, or an abscess the same day. Call ahead and we will hold a spot for you.
